We are making waves with the launch of our new weekly Family Quiet Swim Sessions, designed specifically for autistic children and their families. Starting on Sunday 29th June, these special sessions will take place every Sunday at 1pm and 2pm at Newlands Leisure Centre at Newlands Girls School in Maidenhead, offering a calm, inclusive environment for only £4 per swimmer.

Created in response to the lack of accessible, sensory-friendly leisure activities in the area, the sessions are open to families across Maidenhead and beyond. The pool environment will be carefully managed to reduce noise, crowding, and natural light – helping children with autism feel safe, relaxed, and included.

“Leisure activities should be for everyone,” said Holly Clarke, Founder at Stand Out For Autism. “These sessions are designed to support children who can find traditional swimming sessions overwhelming. We want families to enjoy time together, free from judgment and stress.”

In a unique addition, our Sensory Bus – a mobile sensory room designed for autistic children – will be onsite on the last Sunday of every month. Families attending the swim session will have the opportunity to book private 20-minute sessions on the bus either before or after their swim for £10 per family.

​

The Sensory Bus is fitted with a calming interior, complete with fibre optic lights, interactive panels,  tactile panels, soft furnishings, and music to help regulate and soothe children who may feel overstimulated or anxious.

“The Sensory Bus is a magical space for many children,” added Holly. “Combining it with quiet swim sessions gives families a supportive and flexible experience – whether it’s to ease anxiety before getting in the water, or to unwind afterwards.”

We are encouraging families to pre-book online to secure their spot each week, as places are limited to ensure a low-sensory, calm environment.

 

Every Sunday there will two 45-minute sessions available to book at 1pm and 2pm.

All proceeds go towards sustaining the service and funding further sensory-friendly community initiatives.
